How to get from Chiang Mai airport to the Old City
Compare the airport taxi, Grab and 30-baht RTC bus for an Old City arrival, including pickup points, route choices and late-night limits.

For most arrivals at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), the choice comes down to three options:
- Airport taxi for the simplest fixed-fare, door-to-door trip.
- Grab for a live app quote or an arrival outside the taxi counter’s listed hours.
- RTC city bus for a 30-baht ride if you are travelling light and its route suits your hotel.
Save your hotel’s name, map pin and nearest city gate before landing. The Old City fills the square inside Chiang Mai’s moat, so the right bus loop for a hotel near Tha Phae Gate may be inconvenient for one near the north, west or south side.
Quick comparison
| Option | Best for | Airport pickup point | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi | Straightforward door-to-door transport and substantial luggage | Entrance 1, main terminal, Level 1 | Check the displayed flat fare for your destination |
| Grab | A live app quote or a late arrival | Designated point in the domestic-terminal car park, Level 1 | Fare, wait and vehicle availability vary |
| RTC city bus | A light traveller staying near a listed stop | Outside the international terminal, Level 1 | The loop can be indirect, followed by a walk |
| Hotel transfer | A prearranged pickup, family group or unusually large luggage | As confirmed by the hotel | Must be booked and priced with the accommodation |
Airport taxi: the easy default
Airports of Thailand describes the airport taxi as a flat-rate service with clear pricing at the airport. Its counter is at Entrance 1 on Level 1 of the main terminal, with listed hours of 7am to midnight (Chiang Mai International Airport).
Give the counter your hotel name and map pin, confirm the total fare, and keep any dispatch slip. Because this is advertised as a flat-rate service rather than a metered journey, establish the price at the counter before leaving.
This is the practical default with large bags or accommodation on a small lane inside the Old City. It can also make sense for a group sharing one vehicle.
Grab: an app quote and a 24-hour airport pickup point
The airport lists GrabTaxi, GrabCar and JustGrab. Bookings must use its designated pickup and drop-off point in the domestic-terminal car park on Level 1, which the airport lists as open 24 hours (Chiang Mai International Airport). Follow the app’s pickup instructions and airport signs rather than choosing an arbitrary terminal exit.
Grab is the app-based option to check when you arrive after the taxi counter’s listed midnight closing time. The pickup point being open does not guarantee an immediate car, however; the app’s current quote and estimated wait are what matter.
Check the destination pin before booking. Properties can have similar names, and a guesthouse on a narrow Old City lane may use an entrance on a larger road.
RTC city bus: 30 baht, but choose the loop carefully
The airport’s RTC page lists a fare of 30 baht per trip and two airport loops. It also asks passengers to verify fares and routes again before travelling (Chiang Mai International Airport). The listed boarding point is outside the international terminal on Level 1, and the service window is 7am to midnight.
The loops reach central Chiang Mai in different orders:
- R3 Red, left loop: airport → Wualai Road → Chiang Mai Gate → Night Bazaar area → Tha Phae Gate → Chang Phuak Gate → Nimmanhaemin → airport.
- R3 Yellow, right loop: airport → Suan Dok → Nimmanhaemin → Chang Phuak Gate → Three Kings Monument → Tha Phae Gate → markets and Night Bazaar → Chiang Mai Gate → airport.
For a hotel near the south side or Chiang Mai Gate, the Red loop reaches that area earlier. For the north side or Three Kings Monument, Yellow is generally the more direct choice. Both serve several central stops, but taking the less suitable direction means a much longer circuit.
Show airport staff your hotel pin and ask which loop is departing. Do not read the midnight closing time as a guaranteed final departure from every stop: the airport page gives an operating window, not a stop-by-stop timetable. If the wait is uncertain or the walk from the stop is awkward with bags or rain, use a taxi or check Grab instead.
A practical arrival plan
- Save the hotel pin and nearest landmark offline. Useful references include Chiang Mai Gate, Tha Phae Gate, Chang Phuak Gate and Three Kings Monument.
- If you arrive between 7am and midnight, check the RTC departure. Use it only when the departing loop fits your side of the Old City and the final walk is manageable.
- Otherwise, compare the airport taxi’s displayed fare with the Grab app. Choose the taxi for counter dispatch or Grab for its live quote.
- For an arrival after midnight, check Grab or arrange a hotel transfer in advance. The airport lists Grab’s designated point as open 24 hours, while its taxi and bus pages list 7am to midnight.
Fares, routes and operating hours can change. These details were checked against the airport’s transport pages on 30 October 2026; verify the signs and service information in arrivals before travelling.
